Excerpt:
As I awoke something seemed so wrong and it was. I had over slept the false dawn was shining through my window sun rise wouldn't be far off. Man I needed coffee and no mater what by the time I could get there the birds would be on the ground and grouping up. Slugging down a cup it seemed my first days hunt was doomed. Leaving camp half awake not near enough coffee and very upset the rush was on. The area I would hunt is typical glades and slue habitat of south Florida. Water was still high and driving on most of the roads was like driving in a lake my intention was to stop well short and slowly slip in hopefully unnoticed. Finding a good parking place I stopped and off I went. There was a large grass pond to cross and just before where I had seen the old tom a live oak stand it where I had found all the sign. Almost half was around the pond the sounds of a hen yelping rang out right where I had hoped the birds would be. This is good I thought but it also meant the birds were in the area I wanted to set up and were also very close. With a few more steps I herd a gobbler gobble with several hen yelping close to him. Moving quickly using cover and without calling I worked to the first clump of brush that bordered both the pond and the oak stand. This presented a big problem no trees to lean against. All I had was a small clump of palmettos to sort of lean into and use as a blind. As I had approached my make shift hiding spot the birds were engaged in the classic exchange of yelping cluck and purrs and of course the resounding gobble of the old tom, a sound ill never forget.
